Week Six of the 1920 BBW Replay is in the
books and the pennant races may be starting to sort themselves out. A few teams
have reached the thirty-games -played-mark and by the end of Week Seven all
will be well past it. Week Eight will then start off with a May 31st/Memorial
Day doubleheader extravaganza where everybody plays two, so things are rolling
along.
In the AL, the Yankees have continued with
their grip on first place, even with Babe Ruth
missing all week and only having returned to play on Sunday. The key to the
Yankees so far has been their league-leading 2.01 Team ERA which includes ten
shutouts and twenty-three Quality Starts in their first twenty-nine games. I
have my doubts that New York can maintain that, especially since they are last
in the AL in hitting. A suddenly resurgent White Sox team is in second and
right on their heels as they lead the AL in hitting (.305) with a strong
pitching staff portends good things.
Washington has played very well these first
few weeks, although Walter
Johnson's arm problems have limited his appearances and will continue to do
so going forward. Cleveland finished the week by pounding on the hapless A's
and managed to claw their way back to .500. Can they keep it up and really
climb their way back into the pennant race? It shouldn't be that hard, but they
have spent most of these first few weeks stumbling around the depths of the AL
standings.

In the NL, Pittsburgh and New York spent the
week switching between first and second place. The Giants lead the NL in
hitting (.291) and pitching (2.45), and Pittsburgh will only go as far as Wilbur
Cooper and Babe Adams
can carry them. Cincinnati is running a close third, and below them, Boston, who
spent most of the previous three weeks in first place, is slipping fast.
Brooklyn is still struggling in sixth place.
The Robins didn't pass Chicago and Philadelphia on their way up from last
place, as those two teams passed Brooklyn going down the other way. St. Louis
had temporarily passed Brooklyn down into sixth place but experienced a slight
recovery this past week. With Boston crumbling now, it seems shortly Brooklyn
could end up in fourth place only because of the failures of the teams below
them. If Brooklyn wants to make a charge toward the top, they are going to
have to start winning games on their own as there aren't any more teams ready
to collapse all on their own.
The month of May is almost over, and we have
several busy weeks upcoming, so let's go play some games.
